My interpretation:
“If it’s dark and scary, trap someone into a relationship that helps only you.
By keeping them imprisoned and dependent on you, when they get a chance to escape, they won’t know to leave even though you bring disaster to their friends and everything they hold as beautiful in this world. But at least you won’t be alone.”

I think I like your version better!
My interpretation was that, even if selfish, acts can lead to acts of compassion. While our own needs/wants rule our minds, sometimes the big picture can rule our hearts. Often, the way things are can be better than what we think they could be.

Sometimes seeing things in a new light (no pun intended *grins*) can show us the beauty of what we have. And in the end, compassion leads to other acts of compassion.
