Rules of Engagement

Officially, there are none for the next few days.

I have decided.

I have had a great deal of structure for some time. My vacation times seemed to be periods of rushing from place to place.

It is time to throw all that away. I am taking this week off. I am hitting the road. Where am I headed? North of here. Or west. Or something. I don’t know. Let’s call it a test run for a sabbatical which I would hope to take in one of these. (So take a hint for sponsorship of a good solider/writer, Roadtrek.)

I intend to stop at the visitors’ centers of the states I cross into and hit up the rack of brochures of obscure tourist opportunities. I do hope to visit a few historic sites, but I don’t know exactly where I am headed. Maybe DC. Maybe WV. Maybe both, but the rules are that I have no specific plan or timetable to meet other than I need to be back at work a week from Monday. If I get tired, I’ll sleep, possibly at a cheap 50s-era Motor-lodge or some state park where I decide to throw down my government issue sleep-system. (Thank you, tax-payer.)

Maybe I’ll see some of y’all on the way. Maybe not. But you’ll be in my thoughts and I hope to craft a few words.

Sounds like a plan! How come no one ever says, “and I think I will drive through Oklahoma”?

You really should make every effort to enjoy the 80 degree, sunny & beautiful winter we’re having in Texas.

In any case, happy trails. enjoy your travels.

Too bad they haven’t finished the bridge to Hawaii that I had heard they were working on. Enjoy your trip. The unplanned ones are usually the best!
