In the tradition of Richmond, another question from Anatomy & Physiology:
A patient complains of numbness of the scalp and forehead and shows no blink reflex when the eye is lightly touched with cotton fibers. This suggests damage to?
a. the opthalmic division of the V nerve
b. the maxillary division of the V nerve
c. the III (oculomotor) nerve
d. the VII nerve
e. the VI nerve
and “like always the answer fill be found in the comments later.”
This was a toughy. I’d guess d or e.
My first guess (notice I said “guess”) is C.
Okay, so here’s a test for you:
How much of this discussion http://neuroscience.jhu.edu/DavidLinden.php
do you understand?
Now mind you, I accidently came across his theories from a link on the NY Academy of Sciences website events calendar. Why? ’cause someone told me to get a life this past weekend.
I suspect I’ll get this one wrong too, making me 2 for 2.
3?
I’m not going to answer this one because this is the class I used to teach, and I have put this EXACT question on an exam….
Hint folks: The key is no blink reflex WHEN TOUCHED, hence it is a SENSORY nerve problem rather than a motor nerve problem….
um… huh?
hint: it’s a function of the Trigeminal Nerve
7th nerve
CTG- Well, I knew that the key was probably no blink reflex when touched… but the fact it is a sensory nerve still tells me nothing. Can we attach that to some sort of math theorm? That might help me…
here’s some math: Trigeminal means three branches or three divisions. But it does not refer to the numerical designation of the nerve in question.
I think I might have just given it away. Sorry RSM….Feel free to edit!
