Chill Wind

“Neither player-king nor prostitute be.”
Marcus Aurelius

And so back to the work and the joy of hard work. I cannot change the work, only renew my attitude towards it. But tonight there is promise: a cold wind, a storm of ice and snow that has worked its way across the country finds its way to my porch some time tonight. Perhaps it will amount to nothing as so many things do. Perhaps not, though it could mean a day away from the office.

I’ve laid in the supplies. Aged, dried firewood rests under the awning ready for the chemistry of nature to release its heat in flames. The tanks are full. The vehicles covered, stored away should the sleet turn to an ice storm and the trees explode. Food is stocked and, like so many, I have a fresh supply of milk, eggs, and bread for emergency French toast. Alas, where doth the cinnamon lie?

And so with eager anticipation we are ready for this storm. (honestly, I can survive up to 3 weeks in the cabin at least if need be). A stack of books await next to the bed, extra blankets, flashlights, candles, oil lamps. So it’s not the storm itself, but the promise of the chance to survive that makes it so much fun. It’s the remembrance of a snow-day off from school, a holiday with nothing required of us but to be ready for the next day.

If we get snowed in, I’m hiking to your place.

That is such a satisfying feeling, to be warm and secure in your home, ready to wait out the onslaught of a Mother Nature hissy fit.
