Hold or Fold

I suppose that there should be a few unstated rules. I’m not one for Poker. It’s chance more than anything. A game like spades is more my speed. All the cards are on the table. Every hand can be won with the right skill and a good partner.

But all this time playing spades, hearts, euchre and learning bridge means I see the patterns of the cards a little more easily.

I suppose I should let that experience check itself and drink more beers, but the boys insisted I join in. Then they explained the game. I had never played Hold ‘em and avoid watching when people had it on their TVs. I’m supposed to be socializing with my upper level administrative peers tonight, but that just doesn’t work for me.

The boys lost. Oh yeah, they lost. I love the patterns of the cards. Beer and Football and Poker… teaching the boys the way to play. Life is good.

    Amelie,

nope, I haven’t played either of those games though I am familiar with them. However, I’m a big enough nerd I collect old card game books and manuals and can see a reflection of history through the popularity of card games and their development. e.g. Spades was a direct decendant of Bridge that developed due primarily to the armed forces and WWII. The Canasta craze came about as a result of increased flights and an influx of money post WWII that made South America such a popular travel destination in the late 40s and early 50s.
