Tenure

There is a story going around this fine place about a history scholar we once had. He was an icon and taught in the 80s before political correctness was becoming a new buzzword, long before it was an insult.

The professor, a brilliant man, was known to be less than genteel in many of his statements, especially towards women. “Feelings” were not considered when he spoke. He sensed the dawning of a new age of speech on campuses and specifically resisted it. On occasion, when some female students sat facing him in more relaxed positions, he was known to politely ask, “Ladies, will you please close your Gates to Hell?”

Some reached their tolerance level. After class one day they let him know they did not appreciate his comments and would leave if he continued. He indicated he heard what they were saying.

The next day he strolled in, set his books and notes down on the lecturn, and said, “Did I ever tell you all about the trainload of whores?”

Several of the female students closed their notebooks, got up and began walking out. Just as they reached the door…

“You’re too late, ladies, it already left.”
