Pogie-bait Workshop

In today’s episode:

Tangy Fruit Mix:
Orange-flavored Dried Cranberries
Dried Apples
Vanilla flavored yoghurt covered raisins
a SMALL handful of M&Ms. A “soupçon,” if you will, just enough to get one or two per handful.

Cheesy-fire
Cheddar flavored Chex Mix
Original Goldfish
Dry-roasted peanuts… and none of that low-salt crap
Cheez-it Twisters, Hot Wings flavor, to taste

Now for prepackaged meal stuff, MREs are always tasty. However, when faced with a shortage of cash or a desire to cut down on some packaging or the chance to impress your friends with a fine-smelling meal cooked in your Snow Peak mini-cookset:

For your first night out, just to really piss everyone off, get a small filet mignon, rub it with Montreal Steak Seasoning, then wrap a piece of bacon around it and drop it into a small freezer bag with a bit of olive oil, seal while forcing all the air out and freeze. Just before heading out, drop the packet in your food section. Throughout the day it will thaw and be ready to go for dinner that night, already oiled and ready for the fire.

Next, another steak and potatoes basic:
1 package Loaded Baked flavored Mashed Potato mix (4 oz.)
1 package dried tender cuts or steak nuggets, I prefer Jack Link’s Prime Rib flavored. Cut into bite-sized or smaller chunks.
Prepare half or all the potato mix per the directions (depending on how large your cookware is) and drop in the meat. Add some Butter Buds (you should always have Butter Buds on hand for flavoring, camping or not. It’s a cooking secret I learned in the kitchens of a children’s hospital, and they sure make their food yummy)

Takes up less space than an MRE main course meal packet and can be way more filling with far less fat.

For an exotic bent:

1 Package Thai Kitchen’s Original Pad Thai
1/2 package Extra Firm Tofu or 1 package Sweet Sue chicken breast.
Lose the box, tear it down and toss it in for recycling.

The noodles don’t require active cooking, so soak them in boiling water for 5 minutes, then drain. While still over low heat, add the sauce pack and the chicken if using that. If using tofu, wait for the noodles to cook 1 minute, then break off the tofu in larger chunks. Let everything absorb the sauce pack flavors. Pick some peanuts from your mixes and toss those on top. Use chopsticks if you are cool enough.

Always pack out your trash. The flatter it folds, the easier it is to do.

Next time: In-the-trees Tortellini Alfredo with minimal clean-up mess.

Naturally, looking at the weather, 2 days ago the prediction was for a clear, crisp weekend. Now it’s rain.
